Especially as none of the levels are pushovers, in terms of the ingenuity of the puzzles or the danger posed by the enemies.īut beyond all the usual switch-hitting and enemy-defeating there’s also the key tactic of each player jumping on the others’ shoulders, in what is referred to as a totem. The levels are very small but so is your patience likely to be with less capable allies, so it all seems to balance out pretty well. When starting a level you’re usually given a choice of an addition item or weapon, such as a bow or a water fountain-creating wand, to pick up and use, with the various puzzles and enemy encounters designed to make you use them in various inventive ways. Each set of level follows a different theme, from forest to lava, and culminates in a typically enjoyable boss battle. We’ll get into that in a minute but the basic structure of the game involves you and your two allies (everybody looks like Link, but the ramifications of this are ignored) fighting through a series of small dungeon-like levels. All of this is dramatised by some amusingly silly dialogue, but its slightly more serious purpose is to emphasise the game’s theme of constantly changing costumes. What plot there is revolves around an embittered witch who has a vendetta against the local town’s fashionistas, and in particular its fashion-concious princess. Using a similar top-down viewpoint to A Link Between Worlds, but with an art style more reminiscent of The Wind Waker, Tri Force Heroes is not a game that takes itself very seriously.
